Dear Friends and supporters of Pro Coro Canada

It is an exciting period for our choir as we now gather again in preparation of our concert on Sunday. Hearing all these fabulous voices together in one room, from the earth-shaking low rumbles of the basses through vibrant tenors, rich altos, to the soaring heights of the sopranos, is such a joy. We can’t wait to share this performance with you.

As we’re just coming out of several months of no singing and performing, we’re not quite ready to also add you as audience members to our concert. So, we have to close off our 2021-2022 season with another live-stream instead of an in-person concert.

10 years ago I came to Edmonton as a guest conductor, and I worked with Pro Coro Canada as part of an interview process. It was in November 2011 that we presented a concert at McDougall church, and the last number on the program was the 4th movement of the Path of Miracles. It seems fitting to end Pro Coro’s 40th anniversary season, and a season with restrictions and pandemic hardship, with this composition. Through the music and the words in Path of Miracles, we’re constantly reminded of a hard journey. We think about, and practise, resilience, patience and self-reflection, with the notion that this, too, will end.

Path of Miracles

On Sunday, June 27th at 7:30pm MT, Pro Coro Canada is thrilled to present the last live-streamed concert of our 20.21 season on ProCoroTV: Joby Talbot’s epic masterwork “Path of Miracles.”

The movements of “Path of Miracles” are titled with the names of three staging posts on the network of pilgrims’ ways along the Camino Frances (the French Way) and the final destination, Santiago, where tradition holds that the remains of the apostle Saint James the Great are buried. Throughout the work, quotations from various mediaeval texts are woven together with passages from the Roman liturgy and lines of poetry by Robert Dickinson, the work’s librettist. After a dramatic opening - the call to the Pilgrimage, and the subsequent gathering of lone travellers into a group at Roncesvalles - the beheading of St. James by the sword of King Herod is described in Greek, Latin, Spanish, Basque, French, English, and German.

Alberta Youth Choir

The Alberta Youth Choir is the province's honour choir for singers ages 16-22. AYC provides a unique opportunity for outstanding young singers from across the province to join forces in the pursuit of excellence in choral music. This year, the choir will be directed by Michael Zaugg.

The Pro Coro Team will be working remotely for most of the summer as we plan another great season of choral music! We will be available to answer phone calls and emails, and our office will be open by appointment only during July and August.
