1 - Major musical influence (either a style or a personality)? Canadian composer Ann Southam is a strong artistic influence to me right now. Her music speaks to me about being human and finding a sincere connection to others. She had an outstanding sense of curiosity to new sounds and the world around her and her music reflects that exploration. I find her music has life, energy, and expression. I really relate to all of these areas and connect with her music!
2 - What is your favourite instrument to write for? Windchimes! I have a collection and I just love them. They somehow emerge in a lot of my pieces; however, I am excited about writing for ANY instrument right now. Writing for voice is really compelling to me as well, and I am interested in exploring the ways in which the voice can be expressive, powerful, vulnerable, and intimate. Creating music that makes room for and celebrates the uniqueness found in the voice fascinates me, as does the power and sense of community that materializes through choral singing. 3 - Where do you write your music? I usually compose in my studio at home, or at the University, or in my car. Those are the three spaces I occupy the most these days. 4 - Would you rather read the book before the movie or after? Neither! Ha ha…who has time to watch movies or read a book?!! Honestly, I love to watch movies with my family and when I can, I relish a good book (outside of articles, journals, or textbooks for my coursework). 5 - Are you an early bird or a night owl? Both! I have a busy family and too many exciting composition projects to get to, so you will find me working both late and early in the day. I prefer early, but have learned to work efficiently anytime of the day.
