The Requiem emerged from a challenging decade for Brahms, who moved between cities while exploring musical influences of Richard Wagner and Franz Schubert.

Brahms later added a fifth movement featuring a soprano solo with comforting text, believed to reflect his grief over his mother’s death. Scholars suggest additional influences, including the death of his mentor Robert Schumann.
