We are thrilled to showcase another Pro Coro Canada artist who embodies dedication and professionalism in the pursuit of choral music excellence. This week, we are featuring William Ireton.

Trained first as a pianist, William (Will) is an active chorister and conductor in his home community of Regina, Sask. Since completing his MMus. Degree in Choral Conducting at the University of British Columbia (Dr. Graeme Langager), Will has directed the Luther Bach Choir at the University of Regina.

Can you share your thoughts on the elements of this concert’s repertoire?

I am really enjoying rehearsals on Benedict Sheehan’s A Christmas Carol. Since recording Sheehan’s Ukrainian War Requiem with the Tenors and Basses of Pro Coro Canada and Axios Men’s Ensemble in April of this year, I have been eager to sing more of Sheehan’s music. In A Christmas Carol, Sheehan does very well to balance complexity and accessibility. I believe there are elements in this work that are gratifying to both the professional musician and the casual concertgoer. The way that Sheehan chooses to score this well-beloved story is both novel and sophisticated. At the same time, Sheehan effectively sets many of the familiar and beloved tunes featured in A Christmas Carol in a traditional and pleasing way. 

What are the highlights of performing choral masterpieces for you?

I believe that great compositions provide me with the opportunity to feel humbled; that there may exist a degree of craftsmanship to a composition which I feel compelled to respect. Nothing needs to be “added” on my part.
