Summer 2021 Edition

Dear Friends and supporters of Pro Coro Canada,

Our Pro Coro Canada office is currently closed as our staff is taking a week off to enjoy the summer. I hope you’re also able to take in some sun and warmth and, pending where you are, gather with family and friends.

At the same time, we’re preparing the release of our 21.22 season, and you will see and hear more about the concerts over the next weeks. Mark your calendar: on August 15 we will release the program and the subscriptions!

Meet the Team: today we’re introducing our Administrative Lead Laura Ouellette who joined the team in the Fall of 2020. Laura came to Pro Coro from the MacEwan Conservatory where she held administrative positions for many years. Her start with us was under challenging circumstances, as we were working masked, distanced and often remotely during pandemic restrictions. Now, almost a year later, it’s exciting to work again in-person at the office in downtown Edmonton.

Meet the Team: Laura Ouellette

Laura Ouellette (Craig) is Pro Coro Canada’s Administrative Lead, and has been with the organization since August 2020. She is an Edmonton-based saxophonist and vocalist with a passion for arts administration. She received her BMus from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, and diplomas in Jazz Performance and Jazz Composition from Grant MacEwan Community College (now MacEwan University). Laura is an active performer and entertainer, regularly playing with several local music groups including The Retrofitz, Lindsey Walker, Cristian De La Luna, as well as leading her own band Jakked. Prior to her work with Pro Coro, she was a program manager at MacEwan University’s Conservatory of Music, and is co-owner of Brandenburg Music, Western Canada’s premier drum and percussion store. In addition to Laura’s musical endeavours, she is an avid crafter who crochets, creates mosaics, pottery and paintings, and loves both indoor and outdoor gardening.

1. What is your favourite book?

   • The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. It’s one of those books that I wish I could go back and read again for the first time.

2. What is your favourite movie?

   • There are way too many to choose a favourite! So I’m going with The Birdcage. And I Heart Huckabees. But also Amélie, Lost in Translation, and High Fidelity.

3. Cilantro: yes or no?

   • Yes please! But I always appreciate being asked first.

4. Cottage in the Alps, or cottage on the beach?

   • Cottage on the beach for sure! The beach is my happy place, and I always try to escape somewhere hot during the long cold Edmonton winters.

5. What is your most memorable choral experience?

   • Since I’m a bit of a rock and roller, my most memorable choral experience was when I first heard John Williams’ “Duel of the Fates” while watching Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. It was, in my opinion, the best part of that movie, and it became one of my favourite pieces to pump me up before a gig. I played that song on repeat many, many times.
