1 - Major musical influence (either a style or a personality)? This is always such a tough question as there are so many. If I had to pick one composer as an influence, I'd have to say Karlheinz Stockhausen and his approach to sound, musical form, and musical process. Personality-wise I would say moody, and style-wise I would have to say eclectic. 2 - What is your favourite instrument to write for? The Bass Clarinet. It has the range of a regular Bb clarinet, plus a huge bass register and a rich, sonorous tone, capable of producing gentle drones and complex multiphonics. It really is an incredibly expressive and flexible instrument. 3 - Where do you write your music? I have to admit that most of it is done in front of my desk in my office/studio. However, I do roam far and wide in search of sounds with a portable recorder. If you consider this part of the compositional process, then I write music throughout my community. 4 - Would you rather read the book before the movie or after? Definitely before. I need to be the annoying one telling everyone else how the movie 'got it wrong' and how it 'isn't as good as the book'. 5 - Are you an early bird or a night owl? Compositionally an early bird. In every other aspect a night owl. Can you see the issue?
