Down the Rabbit Hole

Jason Noble is a composer and researcher whose work focuses on meaning in contemporary music. He is an Assistant Professor at the Université de Moncton. Previously, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Université de Montréal, funded by FQRSC, and he worked as a postdoctoral researcher with the ACTOR project (Analysis, Creation, and Teaching of Orchestration). His PhD from McGill University was funded by the prestigious Vanier Scholarship (SSHRC).

In 2018, Jason was a part of Pro Coro Canada’s Choral Art: Conductors and Composers program at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, with Uģis Prauliņš. That was when he decided to dive into reimagining Alice in Wonderland for the Internet age.

"The concept of doubt seemed to me an important thematic link between Alice in Wonderland and the Internet. The fanciful nonsense of Wonderland constantly surprises Alice: this strange new world does not behave the same way as the world she knew, causing her to doubt many things she had previously taken for granted, just as the now-infamous “echo chambers” and ubiquitous suspicions of “fake news” have made doubt the law of the land on the Internet. - Jason Noble, Composer

Meet the Singer

Meet the Singer - Julianna Tinga. Julianna has been making music her whole life, from studying piano to playing in concert bands to performing with choirs both locally and internationally. She is currently studying music and English at The King’s University with the end goal of earning her teaching degree. This is her first season singing with Pro Coro.

What is your major musical influence?

Though I have been surrounded by music within my family and church community since childhood, my biggest musical influence was probably my first piano teacher, Kalman Kovacs. He was a pillar of Edmonton’s music community, an exceptional teacher, and a wonderful human being, and much of my passion for music was inherited from him.

What are your favourite Pro Coro Canada performances?

Pro Coro’s debut of Benedict Sheehan’s A Christmas Carol is my favourite performance to date. This concert will hopefully become an annual event, and its blend of captivating storytelling and stunning music makes it a must-see for all choral enthusiasts!

Which performance should people come and hear, and why?

The upcoming Good Friday concert features a beautiful selection of sacred music and some top-notch organ playing - definitely worth attending!
