The story by Hans Christian Andersen, The Emperor’s New Clothes, tells the tale of a vain emperor who is obsessed with his appearance and fashion. Two cunning weavers deceive him by claiming to make an exquisite suit of clothes that is invisible to those who are unfit for their position or hopelessly stupid. Eager to show off, the emperor commissions the weavers, and although neither he nor his ministers can see the clothes, they all pretend to admire them to avoid appearing foolish. On the day of the grand parade, the emperor proudly walks through the streets wearing nothing but his imaginary suit. The crowd, afraid to admit they see nothing, goes along with the ruse until a child speaks the truth and exclaims that the emperor is not wearing any clothes. The emperor, though embarrassed, continues the procession, realizing too late that he has been fooled.
