Dear Friends and Supporters of Pro Coro Canada,

I’m happy to introduce Jihwan, the last in our weekly installment in our Singer Spotlight series. You will see and hear him, and the 23 other singers, in our next concert on November 28 at 3PM.

I’m very excited to perform in a venue that is new to us - the Westbury Theatre at the ATB Arts Barns. The hall provides an interesting environment for the 6 world-premieres we will present. And the facilities are set up to accommodate all health measures in a comfortable way. We will tell you more later about how to access the venue most efficiently.

If you are interested in witnessing the process of bringing these new works to life, keep an eye on our TV Channel. Between November 21 and 26, we will livestream our rehearsals where we welcome - virtually - the composers to hear their work for the first time. It is an interesting process as we figure out new sounds.

Singer Spotlight: Jihwan Cho

Jihwan Cho –  Vocal Music Lecturer since 2013 at The King's University in Edmonton. Jihwan is the Artistic Director of Edmonton Canadian-Korean Choir, a member of Pro Coro Canada and Schola Cantorum. His recent performances include soloist of Wagner's bicentennial concert with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and a soloist of Edmonton Opera's Drive-in Concert. Also, he is working as an associate Piano Technician at the University of Alberta. Currently, he is pursuing his Doctor of Music degree at the University of Alberta with renowned tenor John Tessier.

1. What was the last TV show you watched?

Squid game. It wasn't on my watchlist until my daughter recommended it. However, I watched it from beginning to end in a week. The games in the show made me nostalgic more for my country, family and friends, especially friends who played the squid game with me. Through the TV show, I rethink capitalism and morality in our human beings and I enjoyed the concept of the show.

2. What is one item that you can't spend a day without?

Piano. Even though I am not a good piano player, I teach vocal music at The King's University and work as a piano technician.

3. Would you rather go to a beach or hiking?

Hiking. If I was 10 years younger, I might choose the beach rather than hiking, but I love hiking much more these days with my family.

4. Opera or Broadway?

Opera. As a trained opera singer, I enjoy opera more than Broadway.

5. What is your favourite part of singing in Pro Coro?

Making powerful and inspirational music with great musicians!
