The workshop will take place at St Basil's Cultural Centre, 10819 71 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 0X8 - This building is behind St Basil's Ukrainian Cathedral on 109 Street. There is a large, free parking lot for you to use. Please let us know in advance if you have accessibility needs, and we'll do our best to assist you.
September 25, Thursday, 6:30 to 9:30pm - St Basil's Cultural Centre
September 26, Friday, 6:30 to 9:30pm - St Basil's Cultural Centre
September 27, Saturday, 10:00am to 3:00pm, with PRO CORO CANADA - St Basil's Cultural Centre
The first session starts on at 6:30pm. Please plan to arrive about 10' ahead of time to find your way into the building. There still will be time for you to get acquainted with the venue, with other Edmonton singers, with Pro Coro Canada' staff and with Lone before the music making starts.
Please bring personal items to make you feel comfortable (such as a water bottle, snacks, indoor shoes or clothing) and items to make notes if you wish (pen/pencil, notepad). There will be chairs available, and you will have a couple of breaks during each session.
A reminder that we assume that all workshop participants also participate in the concert on Sunday afternoon, 3PM, at McDougall United Church (call at 1:30PM). Your entry to the concert is of course free, and you can purchase additional regular priced tickets at 25% off.
As we're now getting into the music making, into exploring new sounds, concepts and textures, Lone is asking you to think about some thematic elements of the concert. Lone has selected a unique and amazing set of choral works for the concert, to be performed by Pro Coro Canada and with you all. From the concert title 'From a root a flower grows' (which is also the title of a work to be performed), the theme has evolved into following:
Rest and Renewal
A deep human longing for rest and spiritual renewal in the face of suffering, despair, and a broken world. The poems of the works are about searching, whether it is the poet Shevchenko in "The sun sets, the mountains darken", longing for the peace of his homeland, or the discovery of woman-ness/woman-hood, or the soul in "The Angel" . We are looking for solace and a sense of belonging. Through images of darkness and light, of roots and blossoming flowers, it is about a peace that transcends earthly turmoil.
Light and Growth
There is also a journey of light and growth, both for the individual and for the group of singers. The flower opens "skywards" from a hidden root, the "dawning light" the sparrow sings of is a new beginning, a hope that "endures through the longest night." For the singers, you are collectively becoming a "vibrant plea" that sings of what "we sow." Through shared voices, each poem channels a unified expression of hope and resilience, that can reach out and encircle our chaotic world.
Please think about how to finish these two sentences:
To the Future, I will bring/contribute .....
I will leave behind ....
And if you wish, please email your two sentences to thechoir@procoro.ca ahead of time for Lone to include in her work.
